We went to the pediatric neurologist last night. The appointment was at 7:00 pm and we weren't seen until 8:15. I had planned with precision Maximo's feeding schedule with the appointment so he wouldn't need to feed while we were out and would happily sleep during the examination. Didn't really happen that way... I fed him a bit in the lobby, then had to finish feeding him while he was getting an ultrasound of his head - not the most private of places, but it kept his head relatively still for the ten minute exam. The doctor said that his reflexes and muscle tone were outstanding for his age, which was really comforting, but (I wish there wasn't a "but") again, something showed up on the ultrasound of his brain. From what I could understand, there was a fluid pouch (much like a water blister) in one of the cavities under the cerebrum. Again, it could be infection or it could be just due to his growth and it'll go away on his own. So, we need to go to a lab and get a urine sample and blood work to test for some infections - I could only make out two on the lab requisition - toxoplasmosis (common found in animal feces - litter box) and rubella. I have no idea what the other two were. I'm planning on asking Dr. Zegarra tomorrow. So, we're supposed to return to the neurologist's office in three weeks... Again, we need to be patient and wait. The doctor summed up everything we need to do for Max right now - give him lots of love and milk and have "mucho paciencia".
Maximo did have his weight taken while we were there (though with his diaper) and it was a little over 2500 grams, so that's good he's still gaining. We'll get the real results tomorrow.
