Today was a good day… Max went last night all night without oxygen. It’s nice to see his face with all but the gavage tube for feedings. We get to see his dark hair too, because when he’s on oxygen he has to wear a hat so they can tape the tube to it so it stays in place. He has gone all day today doing wonderfully without oxygen. His SpO2 has dropped a couple of times, but he’s recovered on his own, except for once when he needed a little spurt of oxygen to get him going again. He just breastfed and actually was eating a lot, so I think it was a little too much for him to manage the eating and breathing bit. Dr. Zegarra mentioned the “h-word” today (home). I’m trying not to get too excited, but it’s nice to know that maybe we’re over half way there to going home. We’ve been withholding one of his gavage feedings a day to see if he’ll take more from me and maintain his weight. The problem is that our little flojito (lazy one) would prefer the food just being dropped into his stomach with no effort. Dr. Zegarra said that if he continues to gain weight for the next two days, we’ll be able to withhold two feedings in one day and when he’s doing well and we can withhold three feedings, then we talk about the “h-word” again. So, it’s been a good day. Maximo is really active when he’s awake and loves to pull out his gavage tube and anything else he can get his hands on. I’d love to see the bill, yesterday alone, they had to replace his gavage tube five times (that’s only the ones I saw in a 12-hour period). So, I hope our luck continues and Maximo keeps getting strong, the setbacks this past week were killing me!
