John and I are kangarooing Max in tandem - sometimes keeping each other company, sometimes giving each other a break. I met with the doctor this morning; he said that Max’s heart and lungs looked strong, and the reason for his sudden dips in SpO2 levels was due to apnea, where probably he gets into a position where he is breathing but can’t get oxygen in or out easily. He was doing so much better the end of last week, so the doctor thinks that this has to do with his flu – there isn’t anything we can do about it other than wait for it to pass. So, again we’re doing the best we can, waiting patiently for the little bugger to get stronger. Yesterday, Max didn’t breastfeed too well either which was stressful for me. Dr. Zegarra says we’re going to start eliminating more feedings because he’s just depending on the food being dumped down his throat. He did however, feed well this morning. It seems that his 9:00 am feedings are his best.

That was true for both of the girls as well. They ate best in the morning when they were hungry and I was the fullest. Breastfeeding can be stressful and frustrating when you have a full term baby, so don't think it is the situation. It helped the first month with Riley when Todd rubbed my shoulders. Then it got much better and easier.

Lots of love,

Hi Jules. Thanks for taking the time to keep us all updated. Steve and I have been avid readers of Maximo's blog. Your little man has made quite an entry. And he is carving an amazing niche as a fighter. I know how hard it is to be in the NICU. Sound like you two (three, actually) are doing an amazing job. I'm glad to hear that kangaroo care has caught on! Our nurses and doctors thought we were crazy when we asked for Willy to be set on my skin. Did they tell you that mothers have the amazing ability to completely control their baby's body temperature? You can warm them up and cool them off. Fathers can only warm them. So there! Use than little factoid, whenever needed to boost your status for any reason at all!

We send our love and prayers, knowing that you are in great big strong, loving hands.

Dear Julie,
I remember going through a similar situation with Stephie. It is difficult to hear the machines and see the levels go up and down. Keep in mind that you are giving him your love, contact and your milk. All together this is much more efficient than any medicine in the world. YOu have a little fighter in your arms!
Lots of love
