Since we live overseas, our colleagues become our family. I am personally not a big fan of overdone birthday parties for little kids. Having simple, small get togethers (or doing nothing at all) goes against the norm here in Peru. Birthday parties are HUGE - food, servers, blow-up bouncy things, and entertainers dancing and screaming into a headset-microphone.
Though he doesn't know it yet, Max is destined for my favorite birthday tradition - whatever you wanted for dinner and Mom would make any kind of cake you wanted too, so I think Max has some squash, chicken and pasta lined up for his first birthday with maybe his first taste of carrot cake.
One thing, I do find super cute, is seeing Maximo's name on these little invitations. We have two birthday parties this weekend alone, one of a colleague's daughter who is turning one and one, well, I'm not sure how we were invited to this one. Tonight, I was just getting Max ready for bed when the doorbell rang...
"Hello" (we have an intercom system)
"Good evening, I have a birthday invitation for Maximo"
"For who?"
"Maximo. Can I leave it here?"
"Okay, hold on a minute."
I run downstairs with Max wrapped in a towel and answer the door. Before me stands a beautiful, tall "put together" Peruvian woman with a Backyardigans' invitation in hand, cooing over Maximo, then commenting how he must be cold.
I grabbed the invitation said thanks, but exhausted after a long day at work, didn't want to fumble through small talk in Spanish, so I turned around and went back inside.
I know he's made some friends at the park. All the maids converge on the park in the late afternoons. So, tomorrow, I need to ask Gloria who this child is... The name is Hanio which sounds masculine to me (maybe?). I have no idea how old this child will be, so buying a present might be tricky.
I do know that the party is on Friday afternoon at 3:30 around the corner from us. So, Gloria will bring him. It is quite common for nannies to bring kids to birthday parties. For me it is a bit strange to see fifteen little kids each playing with their nanny and not interacting with each other very well. I'll be able to get there about an hour late, and will be able to stay a bit before Max needs to return home for his nightly bedtime ritual. It'll be one of those cultural experiences for sure.
