We had a very exciting day today. After approximately 3 hours of sleep (Nana came in last night), today was action packed. First, we had tons of presents from Nana which was fun - like Christmas. Then, Nana enjoyed getting to know her grandson. He actually gave her a great big smile (which made Mom a little jealous).
Also, the opthamologist came today and... good news - Maximo's retinas are fully developed and his eyes look good (preemies are predisposed to retina detachment and possible blindness due to premature retinas). She advised us to help with his eye development by showing him black and white photos and says that in the next few weeks he should be able to see all the colors. It's nice to know that Maximo is progressing well. Our anxiety levels seem to be dropping a bit - we're just enjoying having the handsome little guy in our lives.
I forgot to mention in the last post - the neurologist took all of Maximo's measurements (head, length, weight) and for a 2 week old (adjusted age) he's measuring in the 50th percentile or higher. That's comforting - so his development is somewhere between 2 weeks and 2 1/2 months. So, we're just going to have to let him grow up his own way, in his own time. It is obvious, however, that his neck is getting stronger and he's recognizing our voices and is following them more and more. He seems to be trying to sleep a little bit more each time - every three hours, rather than two... Though my brother just notified us that our niece (who is a month younger) made it seven hours last night. Again, we're not going to be able to compare him to anyone or even really follow developmental guidelines, we'll just have to check in with the doctors and follow our intuitions.
